Building the first pure sequence
Most readers build the first pure sequence inside the first five draws. Sorting the hand by suit and rank is the fastest way to see the sequence.
Sorting by suit
Sort the hand by suit first, then by rank. A pure sequence becomes visible when three cards of the same suit are adjacent in rank.
The first-turn decision
On the first turn, drop the card that is least likely to contribute to a pure sequence. A high card of a suit you have only one of is the usual drop; a card of a long suit you cannot sequence is also a candidate.
Pure sequences and the show
When you declare a show, lay the pure sequence first, then the second sequence or set, then the unmatched cards. The loser pays the face value of the unmatched cards; the winner takes zero.
Reading the pure sequence requirement

A reader who has drawn eleven cards without a pure sequence must either drop or chase the pure sequence aggressively. How to evaluate the hand in the first ten seconds.
The reader who picks up a thirteen-card hand has roughly ten seconds to evaluate the pure-sequence potential. The ten-second window is the desk's rule of thumb for the first look; a reader who takes longer is over-thinking the hand, and a reader who takes less is under-thinking it.
The first look asks three questions. Is there a pure sequence in the hand? Is there a partial pure sequence that can become full with two more cards? Is there a sequence that is close to pure but blocked by a single missing card? Each question narrows the hand's classification. The reader who answers all three can move to the discard-and-draw phase; the reader who cannot should consider the first-drop option.
Why the first look matters
The first look sets the table's pace for the next few draws. A reader who has identified a pure sequence can play aggressively; a reader who has not should play defensively. The first look's discipline is the single biggest determinant of the reader's session result.
Building a second pure sequence

A second pure sequence is the strongest second meld a reader can build. The second pure sequence is independent of the joker; the second pure sequence is read by the table as a sign of a strong hand. A reader who has built a first pure sequence should look for a second pure sequence before looking for a set or an impure sequence.
The first sequence's suit
The first pure sequence is usually built in the suit the reader has the most cards of. The second pure sequence is built in the second-most-represented suit. A reader who holds seven hearts and four clubs should build the first pure sequence in hearts and the second pure sequence in clubs.

A reader who builds two pure sequences and leaves the remaining cards unmatched can still declare a valid show. The pure-sequence-only strategy is conservative; the strategy reduces the joker dependency; the strategy limits the upside but protects against a bad joker reveal.

A reader who is short one card for the second pure sequence can use a joker to build an impure sequence. The impure second sequence is valid; the impure second sequence carries the joker dependency; the reader cannot fall back on a third pure sequence if the joker is contested.
The discard pattern that signals the second sequence
A reader who is building a second pure sequence will discard cards that do not match the suit. The table reads the discard as a sign of a single-suit hand; the table may interpret the read as a strong hand in that suit. The reader should discard the second-suit cards early to keep the read ambiguous.
Why the joker cannot substitute, and common reader mistakes

The joker cannot substitute for a card in a pure sequence. The rule is mechanical: the joker substitutes the missing card as a placeholder, but a placeholder is not a real card. A pure sequence with a joker is an impure sequence by definition. The distinction matters at the show; a reader who declares a "pure" sequence with a joker is making an invalid show.
The mechanical reason
The joker is a wildcard. A wildcard stands in for any card; the stand-in is not the same as a real card. The pure sequence rule was written to require real cards in the run; the rule ensures the show is built from the reader's hand, not from joker substitutions.
The strategic reason
The pure sequence rule exists to keep the show honest. A reader who could use jokers in the pure sequence could declare a show with fewer real cards; the show would be harder to read and easier to fake. The rule protects the table from a wildcard-driven declaration.
Common reader mistake: the implicit joker
A reader who holds 5♠ 6♠ 8♠ and a wild joker of rank 7 may declare the run as 5♠ 6♠ 7♠ 8♠ with the joker substituting for the 7. The declaration is invalid because the pure sequence has a joker. The run reads as an impure sequence with the joker bridging the gap, not as a pure sequence of four.
Common reader mistake: the broken-rank pure sequence
A reader who holds 5♠ 7♠ 8♠ and tries to declare the run as 5♠ 6♠ 7♠ 8♠ is making a different mistake: there is no 6♠ in the hand. The reader must either draw the 6♠ or declare the run as an impure sequence with a joker for the 6. The pure-sequence declaration is invalid because the rank 6 is missing.
Common reader mistake: the cross-suit pure sequence
A reader who holds 5♠ 6♥ 7♠ and tries to declare the run as a pure sequence is making a third mistake: the suit changes mid-run. The cross-suit pure sequence is invalid on every platform. The reader must either build the run in a single suit or declare an impure sequence with two jokers.
